ABOUT THE MATCH
It’s the final group match for the Lions and the Dolphins in this edition of the Momentum ODI Cup 2020. Both the teams have locked in a place for the semi-finals and so have nothing much to lose. Considering the fact that both of them could be playing against each other later, possibly in the final, this match is not without any consequence.
The Dolphins lost their most recent match against the Warriors but won the five before that. As the strongest side this season, the Dolphins will be looking to make a statement against the Lions. The Lions have actually lost their previous two completed matches including one to the Dolphins. A win here is important to regain the momentum in their campaign.
Lions vs Dolphins Momentum ODI Cup 2020 is going to be played at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom on the 13th of March 2020.
The Lions were denied an opportunity to get a win in the previous match as the rain pelted down and did not allow any cricket to be played. The team now has a tough assignment against the Dolphins or it could be looking at three losses from its previous three completed matches heading into the semi-final.
The batting has started to come unstuck for the Lions. They are led by Ryan Rickelton, Dominic Hendricks, and Nicky van Bergh in this regard. The South African national team would have departed for India by the time this match is played and so Reeza Hendricks is not going to be available for selection.
Wihan Lubbe has also been having an excellent tournament with regular contributions from the bat.
Is this batting lineup enough to get past the Dolphins? It could be tough. The dependence on Ryan Rickelton for runs is pretty clear and his own form has just dipped slightly as well.
In such a situation, we could see the Lions be more tentative than is required and falling behind the game. Bjorn Fortuin and Aaron Phangiso will continue to lead the bowling attack for the Lions. Their role is only going to be more important in these final few matches as the pitches have started to take some turn and become quite helpful to the spinners.
The bowling attack for the Lions has been pretty good so far and can be relied upon.
The Dolphins lost their previous game by a narrow margin of 6 runs in the previous match to the Warriors. It was just the second loss for the Dolphins in this edition of the Momentum ODI Cup and can be regarded as a small misstep in the larger scheme of things.
The Dolphins have been excellent with both the ball and the bat in this tournament.
Sarel Erwee, Marques Ackerman, Grant Roelofsen, Khaya Zondo, and even Cody Chetty have performed very well. The middle-order is pretty long and a decent batsman like Robbie Frylinck is batting at number 8 in the lineup.
This makes the Dolphins batting very deep and capable of withstanding a few early wickets.
The Dolphins bowling is not very exciting in terms of big names but it has some very consistent performers. Robbie Frylinck, Prenelan Subrayen, and Sundram Muthusamy have all done well whenever they have taken the ball.
Of course, it is also pretty obvious that having large scores to defend in most matches has helped the Dolphins bowlers as well. The Dolphins beat the Lions pretty comfortably not too long ago and would be confident of repeating the same.
